Quick Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

This recipe helps you whip up some vanilla butter cream icing which is great to keep on hand for cookies and cakes. I think cooking and baking tasty food is always easier if you have recipes on hand to choose from and a well stocked pantry and fridge.  This recipe comes courtesy of Ina Garten and Food Network

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting


  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream


In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.

Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.

Below are my tips to also customize this recipe for future recipes:

Substitute the 1 Teaspoon of vanilla extract for other flavors to work with different cake/cookie recipes:

Think orange extract for lemon pound cake, almond or vanilla for red velvet cake, or almond for a spice cake.
